Animal Wildlife, Up Close
Keepers of the Wild Nature Park is the home to wild cats, primates, birds, and other rescued exotic animals, located on historic Route 66 at mile marker 87, just 29 miles east of Kingman, AZ.
The park practices the ethical treatment of animals with special focus on advocacy, education, and protection. It features rugged terrain, lush vegetation, and more than the required safety precautions, combined with educational, and research facilities that appeal to all ages. Keepers of the Wild is continually expanding to offer an experience for the visitor rivaling that of major zoos.
The park, which started operating in Las Vegas, Nevada in 1995, relocated to Northern Arizona more than 12 years ago. Recently, Keepers of the Wild was recognized for complying with all 20 benchmarks for accountability standards, and for going beyond the requirements of local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
Jonathan Kraft, the Founder and Executive Director of the 175-acre, handicapped- accessible park says, “Our ability to provide a safe haven for wildlife and educate the public never waivers at any time, and it is a passion among all our staff members and the board of directors.”
From tigers and lions to monkeys and birds, visitors don’t have to count on luck to get a glimpse of exotic animals when they visit Keepers of the Wild Nature Park. Visitors can get close enough to hear the inhabitants breathe. The park is open Wednesday through Monday, 9am to 5pm, closed on Tuesdays. Guided safari tours are available. Grapevine Canyon – Lake Mead National Recreation Area
A walk through Grapevine Canyon near Laughlin offers visitors a unique perspective of Mojave Desert life. A fresh water spring flows out of the canyon floor, offering life to a wide variety of plants and animals: stands of cottonwood trees, water-sculpted narrows, a small waterfall, and evidence of the Prehistoric Indians who inhabited the area. Following the trail to the mouth of the canyon leads to ancient petroglyphs dating back more than 800 years. Grapevine Canyon lies to the south of Spirit Mountain, the highest peak in the Newberry Mountains at 5,639 feet. Spirit Mountain and the surrounding canyons collectively have been named a Traditional Cultural Property and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places because of their significance as sacred grounds to the Yuman speaking tribes of the lower Colorado River. Its clear water caters to boaters, swimmers, and fishermen while its desert rewards hikers, wildlife photographers, and roadside sightseers. It is also home to thousands of desert plants and animals, adapted to survive in an extreme place where rain is scarce and temperatures soar. Lake Mohave is a reservoir formed by Davis Dam on the Colorado River, which defines the border between Nevada and Arizona in the United States. The lake lies at an elevation of 647 feet (197 m) near Laughlin, Nevada, Searchlight, Nevada, Cottonwood Cove, Nevada, and Bullhead City, Arizona, The Lake starts at the Hoover Dam on the Colorado River and runs to the Davis Dam. The lake and adjacent lands forming its shoreline are part of the Lake Mead National Recreation Area administered by the U.S. National Park Service. Lake Mohave encompasses 28,260 acres of water.
Oatman has undergone a renaissance of sorts in recent years thanks to burgeoning worldwide interest in Route 66 and the explosive growth of the nearby gaming town of Laughlin, Nevada, which promotes visits to the town. Wild burros freely roam the town and can be hand-fed hay cubes otherwise known as "burro chow," readily available in practically every store in town. Though normally gentle, the burros are in fact wild and signs posted throughout Oatman advise visitors to exercise caution. The donkeys are descended from pack animals turned loose by early prospectors, and are protected by the US Department of the Interior. Weekends in Oatman can see anything from classic car rallies to mock "Wild West" shootouts right down the middle of old 66. Independence Day celebrations include a contest where participants attempt to cook an egg on the sidewalk with the aid of solar devices known as the Oatman Egg Fry Along with the rest of Arizona's US 66 towns, Oatman is fiercely proud of its Route 66 heritage and replicas of 66's black-on-white US highway shield are posted all over the town. Route 66 souvenirs abound and many tourists have pasted autographed one-dollar bills on the walls and ceiling of the Oatman Hotel's bar and restaurant. Estimates of the number of bills run into the thousands.
